FIFA Woman’s World Cup

In Blog

Not often do we see major sporting tournaments in Ottawa, but for the last month I had the pleasure of shooting the FIFA Woman’s World Cup. Ottawa was one of six Canadian cities chosen to host the tournament. The newly re-developed TD Place was the venue for all games played in Ottawa. Even though we had to walk three flights of stairs with all our gear just to get to the Main Media Centre, it was still worth the muscle contractions.

I found it amazing to to see fans get into the World Cup spirit! Every game was well-attended, and fans made sure you knew who they were cheering for. One of my favourite moments from the tournament was when the Mexican National Team arrived at the Ottawa airport. Fans, media, and even the Mexican ambassador to Canada, Francisco Davila, was on hand to welcome the team. I even overheard players saying, “Now we feel like we are at the World Cup.”

It was also nice to be around other photographers. Because FIFA tournaments are so successful, with every international team came its own international media. I met photographers from all over the world. Some working for big agencies like Getty Images, others shooting for smaller soccer enthusiast websites. It was easy to tell that there was definitely interest in what happened and who won.
